Day 23 of the 30-day Blogging Challenge
By Staingirl Kaye
At the beginning of this 30-day Blogging Challenge, Elle had seriously questioned David Cassidy’s blog-worthiness. But in David Cassidy? Try Real Man Gilles Marini, she has thrown down the gauntlet, shamelessly suggesting that the young version of David may not be have been worthy of holding a man card!!! Girlyman????
I thought it would be educational to do a little comparison. First, here is a video of Rod Stewart in 1976 performing Maggie May live (thank you worthor on YouTube):
And here is a video of David doing his world tour in 1974 with the audio of him performing Mae live (this is the first video I posted of David in David Cassidy: My New Obsession):
Bali Ha’I / Mae by keithyoong on YouTube:
Now, I ask you: Which one looks more like a girlyman?

Whoa. I never knew Rod the Mod has such swingin’ hips. Crap. He’s got moves to rival my own – and my hips have known admirers on the dance floor, if I do say so myself. (I’m a woman with few talents, so I’ll brag when I can.) Here, he looks more girly than David does and could actually pass for Celine Dion around the 2:44 mark. And what’s with the insect dance around 5:00? That said, Maggie May is one of those all-time great rock songs and I count a few Rod Stewart CDs in my collection, so I consider myself a casual fan. Still, he’s no he-man, is he?
Now, on to David. I’d like to know how any woman in her right mind (and ears) could resist his speaking voice at the beginning of this clip? Seriously. The way he growls/purrs “lovin’ arms” around me…” around 1:16… I mean, that is one of the ALL-TIME sexiest voices eva. Then we see his little white tushie bopping away. Most men have unremarkable derrières but David Cassidy isn’t one of them, thankfully. He’s got a pretty remarkable backside for a man purportedly blessed…whoops! almost forgot this blog was viewed by minors. Thank you for this enjoyable educational comparison, StaingirlKaye. Much obliged. Oh, has StaingirlElle heard Love Song, Unplugged?” Thirty-tree seconds of irresistible Cassidy vocals.
LMAO, Daydreaming David!!!!! I think I’ll be LMAO all day about your comment!!! Thank you!!!
Don’t feel so bad, DD, I don’t think any woman could compete with those hips, even someone as gifted as yourself. LOL!!! Let’s not forget the eye makeup. I think he WAS going for a look like Celine Dion’s. And…is there actually an audience at Rod’s concert??? At times I’m not so sure. I think the audiences have weighted in as well.
To be fair, I did like some of Rod’s music. And it is still played on the radio today, which is something we cannot say for our beloved David’s music unfortunately.
Thanks for that link too. (How did you manage to make it pretty in this form???) I love that clip and his sweet voice there.
Kaye
Rod is a great performer with a real stage presence but he doesn’t ‘do it’ for me. He definately has a feminine side and I never liked the tight leggings he usually wore. So girly, yeah kind of.
It’s not fair that there are no whole performances from David in this era, everyone has to use the same few clips available. Surely there must be footage lurking somewhere, it would be worth its weight in gold and very stimulating. (Whispers who needs Ann Summers?).
David’s spoken intro is divine, who could resist? He should win Rear of the Year, even now. He’d win hands down (or hands up I’m thinking).
Love song unplugged. Aw, just David and guitar, so young and so lovely. Why doesn’t he sing this on the Partridge Family Album hmmph?!
So no brainer for me David Cassidy. (Forgotten HSN nightmare already yippee!!)
Ha! I like that British Fan!! He’s got my vote – Rear of the Decade!! And other “assets” too.
Ok,so Rod has a little bit of the girlyman in him, but hey he’s a Brit – he can get away with that. DC is American – but he was young then and could get away with that then. But back to Eww -he’s too young. Now that he’s older he’s not so girly, but face it he’s really so-so.
Regarding his audiences, Rod still plays at major venues here in the U.S., and fills the seats, and for all his weirdness, he puts on a great show – even my hubby has enjoyed him, and he didn’t want to go. He has also expanded his repertoire and gone into different types of music.
BTW, I never hear of DC touring or bringing out new music.
So don’t be hatin’ on my Girlybrit!
Well, he’s tried to get back into TV but that got cancelled unfortunately for us Cassidy fans. He’s had a tough time in his career, much of which early on had to do with the stigma of him being such a teen idol and being owned by the PF franchise. He’s had some really bad breaks along the way too. He seems very bitter now and his management and publicist seems to be helping to dig his grave, looking for the fast buck instead of the long term for David. It’s a sad state of affairs right now in Cassidy Land.
I know for me that’s part of the appeal of so much adulation of the “then” David. I have found some great images of him in his forties and early fifties I’ll have to post. I think he’s sexiest actually during this period.
Our David hasn’t had the best breaks, C’est la vie I guess.
Aww Elle, Rod would spin if he heard you call him a Brit. lol! He’s Scottish and very proud of it, although he grew up in London so he sounds English/cockney. Hee, hee I won’t diss Rod hee’s OK. Actually he’s just past 60 and not doing too bad at all in looks/energy department. Have you seen his lovely wife Penny? Tall and very leggy!
Kaye you must get over to DD’s blog. She has a gorgeous video of David from 1995. He’s at the pinnacle of his sexiness and looks.
As for his management now I could spit feathers. He deserves so much more.
Oh, we’re not hatin’ on your GirlyScot, Elle. Must give Mr. Stewart his dues – he’s a fantastic performer whose career spans over forty decades. Hardly knocking his talent. As for DC, he’s still touring and has concert dates booked into 2010 but we’ll grant you he’s not bringing out new music! As to different types of music, David Cassidy’s voice is very versatile and he’s recorded various genres with great results during his career. Rod’s foray into the Great American Songbook is a tad unfortunate, imho. I’m happy Rod the Mod has introduced the standards to a new audience but his voice doesn’t do the songs justice. Cassidy could do those songs justice. Actually, young Cassidy recorded a couple of standards in his heyday, one of which is “If I didn’t care”. Have you heard it, Elle? Perhaps I’ve already provided the link to it; apologies if I’m repeating myself.
Ooh Rod Stewart is going to be on Graham Norton’s chat show tonight on BBC1. Might watch that.
You know, last week we had Donny and Marie doing a tv special. They have a new album out and a Laz Vegas show apparantly. lol!
Last Tuesday there was a programme on about Karen Carpenter. I was watching and my heart stopped as they showed a clip of Shirley Jones and David Cassidy presenting them with the best song of 1970 or whatever. Too late to press record. I wasn’t expecting David on full size screen. I must get some DVD’s to drool over. The impact was incredible compared to little comupter images!
computer images doh!!
British fan, that Grammy award presentation is on UT:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJORAIHgGiI There was a longer version with some chit-chat between David and Andy Williams at the end but that one got removed. I had it on my blog but just scrapped the whole post since the clip is copyright. He was gorgeous in that clip!
Thanks for the address I found it. He is so utterly gorgeous here it’s enough to make you cry. Soppy me. The suit, the bow tie, the perfect hair, devastating smiles. I remember seeing the clip before but couldn’t find it afterwards, so thanks again.
For Elle: Just seen Rod interviewed and he was on brilliant form tonight. Funny, entertaining and dressed in a dashing black suit, white shirt and tie. He looks fantastic for his age and if he’s had any ‘work’ done it certainly isn’t visible. He looks very natural. Even though I don’t generally find Rod attractive or lust after him there is definitely a certain something or aura about him. If I were left alone with him in a room I think he could charm me into bed (can I say that?).
I’m afraid I only have a few meager morsels of praise to dole out for Rod but not because of what I know, but rather because of how much I DON’T know. I read an article a few years back that Rod is such a family man. And I haven’t seen any reports of diva behavior, have you? That’s great he looks so good. It seems hard to believe that David really needed to have anything done. Well, maybe his hair. I’ve seen hair plug jobs much worse than his.
Thanks for telling me about that video, British Fan. I went over their straight away. What a gem!!! I’m still smiling!!
I’m so glad you saw the Grammy award video. I know, he’s SO CUTE!!!
Thanks for posting that link to “If I didn’t care”, DD. That is one of my favorites!!!
LMAO! I didn’t realise David had artificial hair weaved in/transplanted with his own. His hair line seems to have looked the same for the last decade or so. Clever stuff! Guess he couldn’t really be a baldy or go for the shaved look.
As for Rod he rarely gives interviews. I’d forgotten how down to earth and ‘normal’ he is.
Oh yes! I remember reading that about Rod too.
Yeah, the severely balding look on David would be a such a crime, perhaps as bad as the HSN appearance, but in a severely aged, old man sort of way. I can’t even imagine it really, nor do I want to. Eek!
Actually, I’m not sure that is true about the hair restoration. But I’ve seen it mentioned time and again about him and I think it does look like he’s had it done. But I think it is done very well. It looks very natural, unlike his permanent smile he seems to sport these days. LOL!!!
Ha! Lets not go there again!
You may have guessed I have utter contempt for celebrity plastic surgery. Subtle procedures are fine I guess. I understand the pressures they face to look good but these days its just gone too far.
I find it hilarious that people pay large amounts of money to look like they’re permanently caught in a wind tunnel. The trout pout or fish face some women (count Mickey Rourke in that) strive for is laughable. The worst offender is Jocelyn (The Bride of) Wildenstein. The expression WTF comes to mind. The irony cant be lost on the surgeons themselves “I’ll pay you large amounts of money to make me look ridiculous”.
They really need herding together and put in a zoo so we mere mortals can have a good laugh. David is exempt because we love him.
Your descriptions are very amusing!!! LOL!!!! I wanted to throw up when I saw what Meg Ryan and Madeline Stowe did to themselves. Both were so beautiful. The lip procedures they had done make them look a lot less so. They may not have had the fullest lips, but they were shapely and nice enough for lipstick. I’m just hoping that Marissa Tomei and other natural beauties like her don’t follow suit. Anything that would change the shape of their faces in any way would destroy their natural beauty.
I feel the same way about David, by the way. His face is so beautiful, he shouldn’t change the shape of it, even if it means having a few more wrinkles. He shouldn’t have his eyebrows lifted. That just looks so fake. He’d be better off looking his age with his natural face.
Hear Hear! I love his face. It really bothers me that he might ruin it.I feel like writing him (through his site) and saying Don’t do it! But they’d think I was one of his loony tunes fans.
Sorry Kaye, but I love me some Rod! However, to be fair to both performers that was the times and what was ‘in’ so that is how they dressed and danced. I guess for me I loved DC when I was like 8 and fell for Rod as a teenager and is one of my favs! I also like Elton though so you know….
Hey Laura!!! Thanks for weighing in. He certainly seems like a nicer guy these days in general than DC. I like a lot of Elton John’s music. I think he’s a great musician. But OH!!! You mean you don’t look at the young DC here and listen to his sultry voice and just melt????? Unfathomable. LOL!!!
Kaye
Kaye- I wouldn’t go so far as to say I am not enjoying them as I so am! I forgot how sexy he was and down right adorable! However, once you put one of my all time favs up there… well.. let’s just say he is still adorable, can’t say he isn’t!..
lol
Thanks for clarifying, Laura!!! Like Daydreamning David said of Elle, I was beginning to think you might need your eyes checked.
